Brasov
the new and the old town

Located in the centre of the country, in the curvature of the Carpathians from where Transylvania starts and only 170 km from Bucharest, the capital city of Romania, Brasov tells its story full of history in the green forest's harmony which keep watch over it – all these in a new context, dynamic, of a real European city in expansion. But what makes it unforgettable is that unity through diversity which defines it from architectural point of view, being the meeting place of different cultures (mainly Romanian, but Saxons too) and of several epochs, found in a simple walk on the streets of the historical center. In the center of the Brasov Council Square, you can find the symbol edifice of the city – The mayor's former office building- Casa Sfatului – built by the Saxons in 1420, surrounded by elegant houses, with Transylvanian architectural elements. The Hirscher House, finished in 1547 – built in renaissance style, with a long front full of arcades. The Muresenilor House – a building in neoclassical style, which houses a section of the history museum and where a collection of furniture, painting, sculpture give the fresco of the daily life of the romanian bourgeoisie in the 18 century. The Black Church – the biggest Gothic style church in Romania – searched by the tourists but by local music lovers, too, for its organ concerts. Going upwards, towards the Romanian heart of the Old Brasov, we find the String Street – the narrowest street in Europe – 1m – finally reaching the Piata Prundului to a ensemble of Saxon architecture out of which the Saint Nicholas Church rises – the spiritual center of the Romanian community, famous for the frescoes painted on the inside – and with the First Romanian School in its courtyard, rebuilt in baroque style. Here, in Scheii Brasovului, it was the first time they taught in Romanian language in 1559. You can also find here the museum of the Juni, the grave of the great Titulescu, the manuscript with Enescu's Oedipus and a collection of Mironescu's paintings – watercolors and oils on canvas representing the Scheii of Brasov. Around the center of the city, evidence of past times – Gates, Towers, Bastions – named after the guild -tell us the story of the old citadel of Brasov – which was the most fortified in Transylvania. From the time's arch, Brasov presently turns to its guests; commercial fairs and industrial exhibitions, shows and events hosted by the “Sica Alexandrescu” Theater, concerts of the well known philharmonic orchestra Gh. Dima, known throughout Europe, restaurants with traditional or international cuisine, coquette bistros, and for ski lovers - Poiana Brasov, the well known winter resort, which awaits with slides, snow, skating rinks and ... negus
